The PPH Project is dedicated to tackling the global issue of postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity.
Kenya, like other Sub-Saharan African countries, endures high PPH instigated maternal mortality often up to 45% in PPH hot spot counties. The team identified PPH Run as its flagship activity and effectively coordinated a successful run on 6th October, 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya, dubbed PPH Run 2024 under the theme “RUN FOR HER.” The inaugural run attracted over 300 registrants and over 1000 participants from nearly 100 organizations comprising Universities and medical training institutions, hospitals and health centres; Non-Governmental Organizations, National and County governments; civil society and community based organizations; United Nations bodies; Pharmaceutical and Allied companies, Insurance companies and financial institutions. Fourteen (14) other African counties and eleven (11) overseas counties participated in the Run. The Run was graced by Justice Emeritus David Maraga, three Govenors, HE Gladys Wanga (Homa bay), Cecil Mbarire (Embu), and Susan Kihika (Nakuru) and over 10 other political leaders and the Kenyan Olympic Champion Faith Kipyegon. It was officiated by the Cabinet Secretary Health, Dr Deborah Barasa.
During the event, Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority and Eldon Biologicals Kenya, partnered to implement blood group typing and donation. Over 350 units of blood were collected and distributed to eight (8) hospitals in Nairobi to save lives. This event tremendously increased awareness through over 20 print and electronic media as well as social media outlets.
