FIGHTING POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE IN KENYA: BEYOND THE CLINICAL LENS

Activity Description

“We must move beyond the clinical lens – PPH is a mirror reflecting the gaps in equity, education and access. True advocacy demands we confront them all”. – Prof Julius Ogeng’o.

The End Postpartum Hemorrhage Initiative has sensitized pre-service doctors and in service midwives to extend PPH advocacy beyond the dispensaries, health centers, hospitals and clinics by addressing the following hitherto neglected factors: This was highlighted by Prof Ogeng’o during training of pre-service doctors and service midwives held at Natil House, Westlands, Nairobi on 20th June, 2025.

  1. Community based socio cultural practices such as female genital mutilation
  2. Various societal myths and misconceptions around postpartum hemorrhage
  3. Community based indigenous activities such as those practiced by traditional birth attendants and indigenous midwifery practices
  4. Climate change associated factors like heat stress
  5. Environmental factors like black carbon particulate air pollution
