The PPH Project is dedicated to tackling the global issue of postpartum hemorrhage, a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity.
Prof Moses Obimbo, the EPPH-i project lead joined the Gates Foundation to announce a USD 2.5 Billion grant to support women’s health research. Under investment in women’s health is one of the reasons preventable causes continue to inflict high mortality rates, especially in developing countries in Sub Saharan Africa and South East Asia. During the occasion of announcing the Grant, Prof Obimbo said, “Africa accounts for only 18% of global population and 20% of all births, but Sub-Saharan Africa bears the burden of more than 50% of women’s health related challenges and maternal mortality worldwide.” He highlighted key challenges facing women’s health in low and middle income countries from adolescence through motherhood to menopause, including “poor pregnancy outcomes, postpartum hemorrhage, pregnancy related hypertension and infections, neglected tropical diseases, non-communicable diseases like gestational diabetes, gender based violence and harmful traditional practices.
